I had always felt uneasy about the established models of charitable giving, from the mixed motivations behind individual fitness/adventure challenges, to the confrontational methods used by street collectors. Common to all of them was a lack of a philosophical framework for the giver and the receiver. What's important about effective altruism is that it is dogmatic, but theoretical - agency is left to the individual. If I achieve personal financial success, I want to have a framework to help me use that gain effectively and charitably. Founders Pledge is a great part of that framework.
