Research Advisor - London or New York City

ABOUT FOUNDERS PLEDGE

Founders Pledge is a global community of founders and investors who have collectively pledged more than $700 million of their personal proceeds from exit (business sale) to high-impact charities or social enterprises. We have offices in Berlin, London and New York. Our in-house research team advises members on their donations, helping them donate to high-impact charities.

THE RESEARCH TEAM AT FOUNDERS PLEDGE

The research team at Founders Pledge has two main goals:

  1. Pure Research: Find high-impact donation opportunities.
  2. Research Advisory: Help members make high-impact donations.

Pure researchers produce research on charities, which research advisors then recommend to members, depending on the member’s values, interests and preferences. Each side of the Research Team works closely together, with the ultimate aim of helping our members to donate to the highest-impact charities.

For examples of our in-house research, see our reports on climate change, women’s empowerment, evidence-based policy and impact investing on our research page. In the future, we plan to increase our coverage of high risk/high reward approaches, such as policy advocacy, research and impact investing.

We are looking to find people willing to specialise predominantly in either pure research or research advising. There may also be opportunities for research advisors to do some pure research, and for pure researchers to do some advisory work.

ROLE SUMMARY

The aim of the research advisor is to ensure that our members donate to the impactful charities found by our research. You will be responsible for understanding our research in detail, understanding our members' values and preferences, discussing our research, and making donation recommendations.

  • Present on our research at dinners or other events with small groups of high net worth individuals.
  • Manage relationships with pledgers, by making sure that contact is maintained and that appropriate material is sent in follow-up messages.
  • Help the research team to develop new products and approaches that can help to guide our members to high-impact charities.
  • Contribute to overall team strategy

ABOUT YOU

  • Required
    • Commitment to Founders Pledge’s mission, and to social impact generally.
    • Excellent interpersonal and presentational skills: The ability to interact well with people, to explain nuanced research in a compelling way, and to give outstanding presentations to small groups of people.
    • Excellent analytical skills: Comfort working with systematic quantitative frameworks; understanding of, and the ability to build, quantitative models.
    • Excellent organisation: The ability to stay on top of relationships with individuals, for example to follow up with calls and emails, and to track and log all contact.
    • Conscientiousness and prioritisation: A willingness to work hard and to focus time on top priorities.
    • Clear writing: The ability to express nuanced evidence and complex concepts in a clear and compelling way.
    • Intellectual curiosity and openness: A willingness to consider alternative points of view, to follow good arguments wherever they lead, and openness to changing your mind.
    • Willingness to work in a high-growth, dynamic startup environment.
  • Ideal
    • Experience engaging with, and presenting to, high profile clients.
    • At least a Bachelor’s degree in a subject with a substantial quantitative or analytical element, such as maths, statistics, social science, natural science, or analytic philosophy.

Pure Researcher - London

We are looking to find people willing to specialise predominantly in either pure research or research advising. There may also be opportunities for research advisors to do some pure research, and for pure researchers to do some advisory work.

ROLE SUMMARY

Pure researchers will work on the following types of projects:

  1. Long cause reports: A report of at least 30 pages outlining a problem and recommending cost-effective charities working on that problem.
  2. Methodology briefs: Shorter briefs on the methodology of charity evaluation, such as how to evaluate non-testable interventions.
  3. Shallow investigations: Investigations of less than a week into a particular problem area or meta-level question relevant to our research.

In addition to this, we also encourage all members of the research team to contribute to overall team strategy. As a pure researcher, most of your time will be spent on long cause reports. For examples of these, see our reports on climate change, evidence-based policy and on women’s empowerment, on our research page. These reports typically involve:

  • An overview of the problem following interviews with experts and a review of the literature, including academic papers, reports by think tanks and intergovernmental organisations, and so on.
  • An investigation of possible interventions and ways to make progress on the problem, with a focus on finding the most cost-effective approach.
  • An evaluation of charities working on the problem, typically starting with a long-list of up to 20 charities, and narrowing down to 2-4 recommended charities.

We are open to working on a range of cause areas, such as global poverty and health, animal welfare, and major global risks. A major task this year will be identifying new high priority cause areas. In the future, we plan to increase our coverage of high risk/high reward approaches, such as policy advocacy, research or impact investing.

ABOUT YOU

  • Required
    • Commitment to Founders Pledge’s mission, and to social impact generally.
    • Excellent analytical skills: Comfort working with systematic quantitative frameworks; understanding of, and the ability to build, quantitative models.
    • Good calibration: Knowledge of the extent of your own knowledge, and a good sense of how confident you should be in your beliefs.
    • Intellectual curiosity and openness: A willingness to consider alternative points of view, to follow good arguments wherever they lead, and an openness to changing your mind.
    • Clear writing: The ability to express nuanced evidence and complex concepts in a clear way.
    • Conscientiousness and prioritisation: A willingness to work hard and to focus time on top priorities.
    • Good judgement: For example, the ability to decide how long to spend on a project, or on what sections to include in a report.
    • The ability to work well with others, to communicate honestly and directly, and to be open to feedback.
    • Willingness to work in a high-growth, dynamic startup environment.
  • Ideal
    • Experience of charity research, or similar research.
    • At least a bachelor’s degree in a subject with a substantial quantitative or analytical element, such as maths, statistics, social science, natural science, or analytic philosophy.
